MOBILE, Ala. — Southern Miss scored three runs in the eighth inning, two of them on a throwing error, to beat South Alabama 3-1 in baseball Wednesday evening at Eddie Stanky Field.
The loss was the Jaguars’ second in two days and extended their losing streak to five games.
Eighth-Inning Turnaround
South Alabama led 1-0 entering the top of the eighth. Southern Miss put two runners on with no outs after a leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt that pitcher Jared Gates mishandled.
On the next play, the Golden Eagles bunted again to move both runners into scoring position, and first baseman Cole Gleason’s throw sailed wide of first base, allowing both runners to score for a 2-1 Southern Miss lead. A sacrifice fly to center brought in the third run.
Gates Takes Hard-Luck Loss
Gates (1-3) pitched seven innings and allowed two unearned runs on three hits. He struck out a career-high seven batters and walked two.
