Ten Walks Prove Costly as South Alabama Baseball Falls 5-4 at Jackson State

South Alabama baseball pitchers walked 10 batters, and Jackson State scored twice without a hit in the sixth inning to beat the Jaguars 5-4.

JACKSON, Miss. — South Alabama baseball pitchers issued 10 walks Tuesday night, and Jackson State took advantage for a 5-4 win over the Jaguars.

The decisive runs came in the bottom of the sixth inning, when three consecutive walks loaded the bases and the Tigers scored twice without a hit.

Jaguars Strike First

South Alabama took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Bud Collura drew a one-out walk and went to third on a single by Hayden Jones. Collura scored on an RBI groundout, and Jones came home from second when Erik Hindmon reached on an error by the Jackson State third baseman.

Jackson State pulled even in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI double and a passed ball. In the top of the fifth, Collura doubled and scored on a two-out RBI single by Jones, and the teams were tied 3-3 heading to the bottom of the sixth.

Walks Decide It

Matt Peacock entered in relief in the sixth and walked all three batters he faced. A sacrifice fly and an RBI groundout to shortstop followed, giving Jackson State a 5-3 lead. Peacock was charged with the loss.

South Alabama got one run back in the top of the eighth. Hindmon advanced to third on a flyout to right field by Adam Ballew and scored when the relay throw to third went out of play. The Jaguars could not push across the tying run.

Pitching Line

Starter Jared Gates allowed three runs, all unearned, on two hits over five innings. He struck out four and walked six. Cameron Carleton followed Peacock with three scoreless innings, allowing four hits with one strikeout and one walk.

At Mississippi State Tonight

South Alabama stays on the road Wednesday night at No. 12 Mississippi State in Starkville, Miss. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m., with the game carried on ESPN3 and WNSP.
