South Alabama Baseball Needs One Win Over Troy in Saturday Doubleheader for Sun Belt Title

After a 2-1 loss to Troy on Thursday and a weather postponement Friday, No. 29 South Alabama needs one win in Saturday's doubleheader to clinch the Sun Belt regular-season title.

South Alabama baseball needs one more victory to claim the Sun Belt Conference regular-season championship, and the Jaguars will get two chances Saturday when they meet Troy in a doubleheader that will decide the title.

The No. 29-ranked Jaguars lost the series opener to the Trojans 2-1 on Thursday night. Friday evening’s scheduled game was postponed because of weather, pushing the final two games of the series to Saturday.

Title Scenarios

The championship math is straightforward. South Alabama clinches the regular-season crown by winning either of Saturday’s games. Troy must sweep the doubleheader, giving the Trojans all three games of the series, to take the title.

  • Thursday: Troy 2, South Alabama 1
  • Friday: Postponed, weather
  • Saturday, Game 1: 3 p.m.
  • Saturday, Game 2: 6:30 p.m.

Series Opener

Troy took Thursday’s opener by a single run, 2-1, keeping the Trojans’ title hopes alive heading into the weekend. A South Alabama win in that game would have secured the championship.

Saturday Schedule

The first game of the doubleheader is set to begin at 3 p.m., with the second game scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The results will determine which of the two programs claims the Sun Belt regular-season championship.

Update: Series Background

The three-game series at Eddie Stanky Field opened Thursday with South Alabama at 34-18 overall and 19-8 in Sun Belt play and Troy at 29-23 and 17-10. The Saturday finale was scheduled to be televised on ESPN3.

A regular-season championship would be South Alabama’s 15th Sun Belt Conference title and its second in four seasons under head coach Mark Calvi.

Right-hander Kevin Hill (9-0) entered the series seeking his 10th consecutive win. Hill had thrown complete games in each of his last three starts and in four consecutive starts against Sun Belt opponents.
