South Alabama basketball opens its 2012-13 season Friday in Tallahassee, Fla., against No. 25 Florida State in the first round of the Coaches vs. Cancer tournament. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. Central, and the game will be streamed on ESPN3.
The matchup marks the second straight season the Jaguars and Seminoles have opened against each other. Florida State won last season’s meeting 80-39.
Series History
Florida State holds a 10-2 lead in the all-time series with South Alabama. The Seminoles have won the last four meetings between the programs, all of which have come since the 1988-89 season.
The Jaguars compete in the Sun Belt Conference and play their home games at the Mitchell Center in Mobile. Friday’s game is the first of the season for both teams.
Scouting Florida State
Florida State begins the season ranked 25th in the Associated Press poll and tied for 24th in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll. The Seminoles won the 2012 Atlantic Coast Conference tournament championship and won 25 games last season. Media members picked Florida State to finish fourth in the ACC this season.
Senior guard Michael Snaer, the most valuable player of the 2012 ACC tournament, returns as an All-America candidate. Snaer led the Seminoles with a career-high 14.0 points per game last season and is the team’s returning leader in five statistical categories, including scoring, steals, assists and minutes played.
Junior Okaro White is Florida State’s top returning rebounder. He averaged 4.4 rebounds per game while playing in 35 games as a sophomore.
