Matt Graves Aims to Fill South Alabama Basketball Staff Opening by First Day of Classes

South Alabama basketball coach Matt Graves hopes to fill an assistant opening created by Ronald Nored’s move to the Celtics organization by Aug. 19.

MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama men’s basketball coach Matt Graves told AL.com he hopes to fill the open assistant coaching position on his staff by Aug. 19, the first day of fall classes.

Nored Departs for Celtics Affiliate

The opening was created when assistant Ronald Nored, an Alabama native, left the Jaguars to accept a position with the Boston Celtics’ NBA Development League affiliate. Nored played at Butler under Brad Stevens, who was hired as the Celtics’ head coach a few weeks ago.

Nored joined Graves’ first South Alabama staff in April.

Search Under Way

Graves said he is reviewing applicants and consulting with peers in the coaching profession. He said that in about three and a half months on the job he has learned a great deal about the university and how the program needs to recruit, which has helped him refine what he wants in an assistant who will also have recruiting responsibilities.

Scholarship Available

Graves said the Jaguars have one scholarship that is not currently in use. He did not rule out using it on a mid-year transfer, and said that if it is not used this year it will be carried over to next year’s recruiting class.

South Alabama competes in the Sun Belt Conference and plays its home games at the Mitchell Center.

Update: Nored Joins Maine Red Claws

Nored’s new position is with the Maine Red Claws, the Boston Celtics’ NBA Development League franchise, where he will reunite with Stevens’ organization. Before joining South Alabama, Nored spent one season as head coach at Brownsburg High School in Indiana. He was a four-year letterwinner at Butler from 2008 to 2012.

Graves was Stevens’ top assistant at Butler before he was hired as South Alabama’s head coach.
