MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama’s men’s and women’s basketball teams both opened the 2008-09 season with victories, as the Lady Jaguars routed Nicholls State 83-30 at the Mitchell Center and the Jaguars defeated Alcorn State 87-79.
Lady Jaguars 83, Nicholls State 30
The Lady Jaguars scored the game’s first 16 points and led the rest of the way.
South Alabama forced 36 Nicholls State turnovers and converted them into 32 points. Four Lady Jaguars finished in double figures.
The Lady Jaguars return to the Mitchell Center on Monday to host UAB at 7:05 p.m.
Jaguars 87, Alcorn State 79
The South Alabama men led from the start and never gave up the lead in their 87-79 win over Alcorn State.
Four Jaguar starters scored in double figures. Brandon Davis led the way with 21 points and grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds.
South Alabama dominated the boards, outrebounding the Braves 51-29.
Bryan Sherrer ran the offense at point guard, taking over the role previously held by Daon Merritt, who graduated.
Braves Hit From Outside
Alcorn State made 12 of 26 three-point attempts in the game, with more of its success from long range coming in the first half.
The Jaguars led 57-44 at halftime. Alcorn State outscored South Alabama 35-30 after the break, but the Braves could not overcome the first-half deficit.
The Jaguars are coached by Ronnie Arrow and compete in the Sun Belt Conference.
