MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama has asked the NCAA to grant immediate eligibility to wide receiver Danny Woodson Jr., who transferred to the Jaguars from Alabama this spring.
Daniel McCarthy, South Alabama’s assistant director of athletics for compliance and student services, told AL.com that the school has not yet received a response to the request.
The Transfer Rule
NCAA rules require a player who transfers from one Football Bowl Subdivision school to another to sit out a season before becoming eligible. Schools may apply for a waiver of that requirement on a player’s behalf.
South Alabama did not disclose the circumstances behind its application for Woodson.
Without a waiver, Woodson would sit out the 2013 season and then have two years of eligibility remaining at South Alabama.
Timing
The NCAA has not set a timetable for a decision. South Alabama, coached by Joey Jones, hopes to hear before the Jaguars open preseason camp on Aug. 1. The NCAA could also request more information, which would push a decision back further.
Woodson’s Background
Woodson is a former standout at LeFlore High School in Mobile, where he was a two-time first-team all-state selection by the Alabama Sports Writers Association. He redshirted at Alabama in 2011 and appeared in six games for the Crimson Tide in 2012.
South Alabama competes in the Sun Belt Conference and plays its home games at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
