MOBILE, Ala. — Wide receiver Danny Woodson Jr. is eligible to play immediately for South Alabama after the NCAA approved a waiver the university filed on his behalf, the school learned Friday afternoon.
Woodson, a Mobile native, transferred to South Alabama from the University of Alabama and enrolled at USA over the summer. He will have three years of eligibility remaining with the Jaguars.
From Tuscaloosa Back To Mobile
Woodson, listed at 6-foot-1 and 201 pounds, spent the past two seasons at Alabama. He appeared in six games for the Crimson Tide during the 2012 season, when Alabama won the national championship. The Crimson Tide have won the last two national titles.
South Alabama head coach Joey Jones welcomed the ruling. “He’s a great football player and a great young man,” Jones said. “Danny can make a big difference in our offensive production.”
Standout Career At LeFlore
Woodson was a highly regarded prospect out of Mobile’s LeFlore High School. ESPN.com rated him a four-star recruit, and three other national recruiting services ranked him among the top 30 players in the country.
As a senior at LeFlore, Woodson caught 78 passes for 1,360 yards and 25 touchdowns. The Rattlers reached the quarterfinals of the Class 5A state playoffs that season, and Woodson was named first-team all-state by the Alabama Sports Writers Association.
Practice Continues, Scrimmage Saturday
Woodson had been allowed to practice with the Jaguars while the NCAA considered the waiver request. With the approval in hand, he will continue to practice through the remainder of preseason camp and into game preparation for the 2013 season.
His next opportunity on the field comes Saturday, when South Alabama holds its second preseason scrimmage at Ladd-Peebles Stadium beginning at 9 a.m.
Adding To The Receiving Corps
Woodson joins a South Alabama receiving group that added a new option last season when Gabe Loper moved from cornerback to wide receiver in the middle of the 2012 season.
South Alabama competes in the Sun Belt Conference and plays its home games at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile.
