Former Alabama Wide Receiver and LeFlore Standout Danny Woodson Transfers to South Alabama

Former Alabama receiver and LeFlore High School standout Danny Woodson has transferred to South Alabama and will sit out the 2013 season.

MOBILE, Ala. — Former Alabama wide receiver Danny Woodson, a LeFlore High School graduate, is transferring to South Alabama, Jaguars head coach Joey Jones announced Monday.

Woodson, listed at 6-foot-1 and 195 pounds, has signed a grant-in-aid agreement with South Alabama. Under NCAA transfer rules, he will sit out the 2013 season and will then have two years of eligibility remaining with the Jaguars.

Two Seasons at Alabama

South Alabama recruited Woodson out of high school before he signed with Alabama. He redshirted as a freshman in 2011, when the Crimson Tide won the BCS national championship.

Last season, Woodson appeared in six games and caught one pass for nine yards in Alabama’s 52-0 win over Arkansas. The Crimson Tide went on to win a second straight national title.

Decorated High School Career

At LeFlore, Woodson was a two-time first-team all-state selection by the Alabama Sports Writers Association. As a senior, he caught 78 passes for 1,360 yards and was named to the ASWA Super 12. He scored 25 touchdowns as a junior.

ESPN.com rated Woodson a four-star prospect and one of the top 150 players nationally. National recruiting services ranked him among the top 30 wide receivers in the country:

  • ESPN.com: No. 22
  • Rivals.com: No. 25
  • Scout.com: No. 28

He also received honorable mention on the Orlando Sentinel’s All-Southern team, was ranked 64th in the Mobile Press-Register’s Super Southeast 120 and was No. 6 in the Press-Register’s Elite 18.

In addition to Alabama and South Alabama, Woodson was recruited by Auburn, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Kentucky and Texas Tech.

Family Ties to the Crimson Tide

Woodson’s father, Danny Woodson Sr., played quarterback at Alabama in 1990 and 1991.

Program Background

South Alabama competes in the Sun Belt Conference and plays its home games at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile.
