South Alabama Receiver Danny Woodson Jr. Out for Season With Ruptured Achilles

South Alabama receiver Danny Woodson Jr., a transfer from Alabama, will miss the rest of the 2013 season with a ruptured Achilles suffered in a 17-16 loss to Arkansas State.

MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama receiver Danny Woodson Jr. will miss the rest of the 2013 season after rupturing his Achilles tendon in the Jaguars’ 17-16 loss to Arkansas State on Saturday.

Woodson was hurt during South Alabama’s next-to-last offensive series. He was lined up away from the play and came to the sideline in apparent pain.

Alabama Transfer

Woodson transferred to South Alabama from the University of Alabama in May. He applied for an NCAA waiver to play immediately, and the waiver was granted, making him eligible for the 2013 season.

Season Production

Woodson ranks fourth on the team with 26 receptions for 409 yards and four touchdowns, and he is South Alabama’s third-leading scorer with 24 points.

His best game came against Texas State, when he caught five passes for 118 yards, including touchdown receptions of 42 and 43 yards. Those scores helped South Alabama rally to take the lead, but Texas State won on a field goal with four seconds remaining.

Opposing defenses have at times used double coverage on Woodson, which has left Shavarez Smith and other Jaguar receivers in one-on-one matchups.

Schedule Ahead

South Alabama has an open date before its next game, giving the coaching staff two weeks to adjust the offense without Woodson.

The Jaguars have four games remaining. They travel to Annapolis, Md., to face Navy, which lost 38-34 to Notre Dame on Saturday. South Alabama then closes with three Sun Belt Conference games: home dates against Louisiana-Lafayette and Louisiana-Monroe, currently the top two teams in the league standings, and a trip to Atlanta to face Georgia State in between.

McCarron Offers Support

Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron, a Mobile native, posted a message of support for the Jaguars on Twitter on Monday.

“S/O to South Alabama Fball team for a awesome year so far. I know there has been tough losses but stay to the grind & they will turn to W’s,” McCarron wrote.

Earlier this year, former Jaguar linebacker Jake Johnson ruptured his Achilles in January during his first practice at the Senior Bowl in Mobile.
