South Alabama Football Defense Forces Turnovers On Donor Appreciation Day Before Spring Scrimmage

South Alabama's defense forced several turnovers during Donor Appreciation Day practice at Ladd-Peebles Stadium, two days before the Jaguars' spring scrimmage and uniform unveiling.

MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama football held Donor Appreciation Day at Ladd-Peebles Stadium on Wednesday, and the Jaguars’ defense controlled the afternoon’s practice by forcing a series of turnovers two days before the program’s spring scrimmage.

Gregory: A Tough Day For The Offense

Offensive coordinator Greg Gregory said Wednesday was among the offense’s worst days since spring practice began, with interceptions and fumbles throughout the session.

There were bright spots on offense. Receiver Courtney Smith made several good catches, and the running backs made defenders miss with their cuts.

Defense Takes The Ball Away

The defense forced and recovered fumbles and intercepted several passes. Defensive back Tim Harvey made a one-handed interception while defending a slant route after the quarterback overthrew his receiver.

Defensive coordinator Bill Clark’s schemes call for an aggressive approach, which requires the defensive backs to support against the run as well as cover. The safeties are expected to come up to the line of scrimmage and fill gaps around the defensive line and linebackers.

Walker: Pass Defense Still A Focus

Defensive backs coach Duwan Walker said the secondary must improve against the pass, particularly deep throws. With many teams running spread offenses similar to the one South Alabama will use, Walker said, completions and occasional big plays will happen, and his players must learn to put them behind them and focus on the next snap.

The coaching staff said the players have progressed well this spring, with some coaches saying the team is further along than expected. Coaches also expressed enthusiasm about the players who will join the program this fall.

Spring Scrimmage Friday At Ladd-Peebles

The Jaguars will not practice Thursday ahead of Friday evening’s spring scrimmage at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. Gates open at 4:30 p.m., and the scrimmage begins at 5:30 p.m.

The event will open with drills and close with a half of offense-versus-defense play. Because the roster does not yet have enough players at several positions for a full team-versus-team format, the scrimmage will use a modified scoring system in which the defense can earn points for turnovers and other plays.

South Alabama will also unveil its football uniform to the public for the first time at the scrimmage. Fans are encouraged to wear red.

The Jaguars, coached by Joey Jones, will begin play in their inaugural season this fall, with home games at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.

Scrimmage Day Schedule

Admission to Friday’s scrimmage is free and open to the public. Student tailgating begins at 3:30 p.m., ahead of the 4:30 p.m. gate opening and 5:30 p.m. start.

The new uniforms are scheduled to be unveiled at 7 p.m. At about 7:15 p.m., fans may go onto the field for a meet-and-greet and autograph session with Jaguars coaches and players.

The USA Athletic Department will sell season tickets on site during the event, and the USA Bookstore will have new merchandise and souvenirs available for purchase.
