MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama football has signed its first scheduling contract, a four-game series with the U.S. Naval Academy, head coach Joey Jones announced during the unveiling of the university’s new Jaguar athletics logo.
Home-and-Home Series With Navy
Under the agreement for the South Alabama Navy series, two games will be played at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile and two at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md. Dates for the games were not part of the announcement.
The contract is the first scheduling agreement for the new program, which Jones is building toward its first season of competition in 2009.
Largest Gift to Football Program
The university also announced a $500,000 gift toward the new football fieldhouse from Jim Yance, chairman of the University of South Alabama’s Campaign USA and vice chairman of the USA Board of Trustees, and his wife, Frances.
In recognition of the gift, the fieldhouse’s main foyer entrance, head coach’s office and conference room, reception area and administrative offices will be collectively named the Jim and Frances Yance Coaches Suite.
The donation is the first fundraising gift and naming opportunity for the fieldhouse and the largest gift to the football program to date.
New Look for the Jaguars
Both announcements came as South Alabama introduced its new Jaguar sports logo, which will represent the university’s athletic programs, including the football team that will compete in Mobile beginning next fall.
