Romello Riley, a defensive end who enrolled at South Alabama in January, is hospitalized in New Orleans after collapsing during a workout Friday.
Riley, 19, collapsed at a fitness club in his hometown of Ocean Springs, Miss. GulfLive.com reported that he suffered a stroke caused by a blood clot on his brain and has paralysis on the right side of his body.
Condition
According to the most recent reports, Riley remained in critical condition but was expected to be moved to a private room late Tuesday.
Jones: ‘We’re Hoping for the Best’
South Alabama head coach Joey Jones issued a brief statement to AL.com.
“First of all, our prayers go out to Romello and his family,” Jones said. “A very tough situation. As a family at South Alabama, especially with our football program, we are very concerned. He’s a great kid who works hard and we’re hoping for the best.”
Junior College Transfer
The 6-foot-3, 240-pound Riley transferred to South Alabama as a junior after spending two seasons at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. He enrolled at the university in January.
South Alabama competes in the Sun Belt Conference and plays its home games at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile.
