MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama football announced Monday that it has signed defensive lineman Dondre Chanet of Hutchinson Community College in Kansas to a national letter of intent.
Chanet, 6-foot-1 and 315 pounds, will enroll at South Alabama in the fall with two seasons of eligibility remaining. His signing brings the Jaguars’ 2014 recruiting class to 22 players.
All-Conference Season at Hutchinson
Chanet was a second-team All-Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference selection last fall. He recorded 33 tackles, including 3.5 tackles for loss, along with one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one pass breakup.
He posted a season-high seven tackles, one for a loss, against nationally ranked Butler Community College, and had six tackles and a fumble recovery against Independence Community College.
Hutchinson closed its season with a 57-0 win over Dakota College at Bottineau in the Salt Lake City Bowl and finished ranked 17th in the final National Junior College Athletic Association poll.
Third JUCO Lineman in Class
Chanet is the third junior college defensive lineman to sign with South Alabama in this recruiting class. The Jaguars are replacing several defensive linemen who graduated, including members of the first freshman recruiting class to sign with the program.
Coming Off 6-6 Season
South Alabama went 6-6 overall and 4-3 in Sun Belt Conference play last season, its first as a full member of the Football Bowl Subdivision and the fifth season in program history. The Jaguars are coached by Joey Jones and play home games at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
