MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama wide receivers coach Jerry Mack has accepted the head coaching position at North Carolina Central University, his first job as a head coach.
Mack, 33, becomes the 22nd head coach in North Carolina Central history. He just completed his second season on Joey Jones’ staff at South Alabama.
Replacing an Interim Coach
Mack takes over for interim head coach Dwayne Foster, who led the Eagles to a 5-7 record this season. Foster took charge after the school fired former head coach Henry Frazier III in August.
Mack’s Background
Mack played wide receiver at Jackson State and Arkansas State. Before coming to Mobile, he worked as an assistant coach at Delta State, Jackson State, Central Arkansas, Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Memphis. He also completed three NFL coaching internships with the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills.
South Alabama hired Mack in February 2012 to coach its wide receivers, replacing Ron Antoine.
Second Jaguar Assistant to Land FCS Job
Mack is the second South Alabama assistant in as many years to become a head coach at the Football Championship Subdivision level. Former Jaguars defensive coordinator Bill Clark was named head coach at Jacksonville State a year ago.
South Alabama, which competes in the Sun Belt Conference, will need to fill the wide receivers coaching position on Jones’ staff.
