MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama has received three junior college commitments, from two running backs and a wide receiver, according to Rivals.com, as the signing period for junior college players opens Wednesday.
Two Running Backs
Cristobal Dinham, a 5-foot-9, 205-pound running back from Independence Community College in Kansas, committed to the Jaguars ahead of Wednesday’s signing date. A native of Lithonia, Ga., Dinham is not rated by the Rivals or Scout recruiting networks.
Justin Jones, a 5-foot-6, 180-pound running back from Northwest Mississippi Community College, is also expected to sign with South Alabama on Wednesday. Jones, from Horn Lake, Miss., was reported by recruiting sites to have committed to the Jaguars over the summer.
Both backs would add depth at a position where injuries left South Alabama thin late in the 2012 season.
Receiver From Massachusetts
Rivals.com also lists a commitment from ShaVarez Smith, a 6-foot-2, 205-pound wide receiver from Dean Junior College in Franklin, Mass. Smith committed Saturday. He is rated a two-star prospect by Rivals and a three-star prospect by ESPN, and he was listed with a 4.5-second 40-yard dash time coming out of high school in McDonough, Ga.
Smith also held offers from Charlotte, Ohio and South Carolina.
Signing Calendar
Junior college players may begin signing and submitting national letters of intent Wednesday and have until Jan. 15 to do so. High school prospects can begin signing Feb. 6 and have until April 1.
South Alabama, coached by Joey Jones, just completed its first season of play as a full member of the Sun Belt Conference.
