MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama is expected to announce Friday that Kevin Sherrer, the University of Alabama’s director of player development, will become the Jaguars’ defensive coordinator.
Sherrer would succeed Bill Clark, who left last month to become head coach at Jacksonville State. Sherrer and Clark are longtime friends, and Clark often consulted Sherrer on defensive philosophy and game planning.
Role at Alabama
At Alabama, Sherrer has focused on the off-the-field side of the Crimson Tide’s athletes, helping players balance the demands of academics, athletics, community outreach and their personal lives. He also assisted with the strength and conditioning program and the peer intervention group.
High School Success at Hoover
Before joining the Alabama staff, Sherrer spent five seasons, 2005 through 2009, at Hoover High School. He was a defensive assistant for two seasons and defensive coordinator for three. Hoover won state championships in 2005 and 2009.
From 2001 through 2004, he was a defensive assistant at Spain Park High School.
Playing and Early Coaching Career
Sherrer played tight end at Alabama from 1993 to 1995 and lettered in 1995. After graduating in 1996, he spent two seasons as an assistant at Tuscaloosa County High School, which won a state title in 1997.
He returned to Alabama in 1998 as a defensive graduate assistant for three years. The Crimson Tide won the Music City Bowl after the 1998 season and the Southeastern Conference championship in 1999, earning an Orange Bowl berth. Sherrer received a master’s degree in higher education from Alabama in 2000.
Sherrer and his wife have twin sons, Kaleb and Kyle.
Secondary Coach Also Expected
South Alabama is also expected to name a new defensive backs coach early next week. That position opened when Duwan Walker left to become defensive coordinator at Jacksonville State on Clark’s staff.
Joey Jones is South Alabama’s head coach.
