MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama women’s basketball senior Mansa El will take part in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s “So You Want To Be A Coach” program this weekend in New Orleans, held in conjunction with the NCAA Women’s Final Four.
El was one of 50 student-athletes nationwide selected last month for the 11th annual program, a three-day workshop that begins Friday alongside the WBCA National Convention.
About the Program
The program is designed to help female college basketball players who want to pursue coaching careers in women’s basketball. It provides professional development through education, skill-building, networking and exposure, and aims to raise awareness of talented players interested in becoming coaches.
Applicants must meet six criteria. They must have completed their final year of eligibility at a four-year institution or graduated within the past year; intend to pursue a coaching career; be a credit to women’s basketball on and off the court; be nominated by their head coach; carry a cumulative grade-point average of at least 2.5; and be able to attend all three days.
Candidates also submit an essay, a resume and a letter of recommendation.
Selection
El waited more than a month while applications were reviewed. She received word of her invitation shortly before the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
El has played three seasons for the Lady Jaguars, starting at point guard for the past two. She is scheduled to graduate in May with a degree in interdisciplinary studies and plans to pursue a coaching position.
Workshop Schedule
During the clinic, participants will watch several 45-minute on-court demonstrations led by prominent coaches. Seminars will cover topics including balancing a coaching career with personal life, recruiting, hiring a staff and preparing for interviews.
On Saturday morning, participants will assist WBCA coaches with the NCAA Youth Clinics. On Sunday, they will take part in mock interview sessions to apply what they have learned.
