MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama will not renew the contract of head soccer coach Mike Varga, athletic director Joel Erdmann announced, and the university will begin a national search for his replacement immediately.
Varga led the Jaguars for the past 14 seasons and compiled a 121-131-26 record at South Alabama.
Mike Varga’s Tenure
Under Varga, South Alabama earned a share of the 2000 Sun Belt Conference regular-season championship and reached the championship match of the 2005 Sun Belt tournament.
Varga has an overall record of 186-155-32 in 18 seasons as a college head coach. Before coming to South Alabama, he was the head coach at Lincoln Memorial in Tennessee.
2012 Season
The Jaguars finished this season 8-10-3. South Alabama hosted the Sun Belt Conference soccer championship tournament at The Cage on campus, entering the eight-team field as the No. 7 seed, and was eliminated in the first round by Middle Tennessee.
Erdmann on the Search
“Mike has been a loyal and trustworthy member of the University and Jaguar Athletics,” Erdmann said. “We deeply appreciate his service and wish him the best in all future endeavors.”
Erdmann said the university will move quickly to find Varga’s successor. “We will conduct a national search beginning immediately,” he said. “The search is wide open and we will pursue the best-qualified candidate for our program.”
