South Alabama Soccer Splits Opening Weekend, Beating Nicholls State Before Falling at Mercer

South Alabama soccer opened 2012 with a 2-1 win over Nicholls State on Friday and a 1-0 loss at Mercer on Sunday to start the season 1-1-0.

South Alabama soccer split its opening weekend of the 2012 season, beating Nicholls State 2-1 on Friday before losing 1-0 at Mercer on Sunday.

The results leave the Jaguars at 1-1-0 to start the season under head coach Mike Varga.

Opening Win Over Nicholls State

South Alabama earned its first victory of the season in Friday’s opener, edging Nicholls State by a goal.

Road Loss at Mercer

The Jaguars then traveled to Mercer for their first road match and were held scoreless in a 1-0 loss Sunday.

Preseason Tune-Up

South Alabama unofficially opened its season the previous weekend with its annual alumni game at The Cage, the team’s home field on Old Shell Road. Varga said before the season that this year’s roster includes many returning players with two years of experience.
