South Alabama Soccer Outscores Southern Miss, Southern 13-0 in Weekend Sweep

Sophie Haywood's hat trick led a 6-0 win over Southern Miss, and South Alabama soccer added a 7-0 win at Southern to finish a 13-0 weekend.

South Alabama soccer won both of its matches over the weekend by shutout, beating Southern Miss 6-0 on Friday and Southern University 7-0 on Sunday for a combined 13-0 margin.

The two wins improved the Jaguars to 4-2 on the season.

Haywood Hat Trick Against Southern Miss

Freshman Sophie Haywood scored three goals Friday as South Alabama beat Southern Miss 6-0 at The Cage in Mobile. The Golden Eagles were shown a red card early in the match.

Haywood opened the scoring at the 33:12 mark, finishing from near the left byline after a corner kick. She added her second goal seven minutes later from the top of the box and completed the hat trick late in the match with a low shot past the goalkeeper.

Junior Nini Rabsatt-Smith and freshmen Tiina Trutsi and Rio Hardy also scored for South Alabama.

The Jaguars outshot Southern Miss 31-3. The six-goal margin was South Alabama’s second-largest margin of victory in the series.

Freshmen Lead the Way at Southern

South Alabama scored seven times Sunday against Southern University, with freshmen accounting for six of the goals.

Charde Hannah scored in the 13th minute and Danielle Henley followed in the 14th for a 2-0 lead. Rio Hardy scored the first of her two goals in the 23rd minute, and Chelsea Followwell scored the first goal of her career in the 26th minute to make it 4-0.

Junior Jordan Duncan made it 5-0 in the 37th minute, which was the score at halftime.

Hardy scored again in the 56th minute, and Meagan O’Loughlin closed the scoring in the 89th minute.

Hardy also had two assists for a six-point match, the first of her college career. Hannah and Followwell each added an assist, and Rabsatt-Smith had two assists.

Winkworth Cites Depth

“It was a very team-oriented, professional performance,” South Alabama head coach Graham Winkworth said after the Southern match. “The first half, we started slowly; Southern sat back and we didn’t move the ball quickly enough. But once we started to move the ball around a little bit quicker, we started creating more chances.”

“That shows how good we are from a depth standpoint,” Winkworth said. “We have a lot of quality; we’re not a one-player team. When an opposing side is trying to scout us, who do they want to mark? You’re going to have to mark everybody because we’ve got a pretty solid group, and that’s not necessarily the players starting either; we have some quality coming off the bench. We emphasized that again today with scoring two more goals off the bench.”
