South Alabama Volleyball Takes Second at Lady Techster Invitational After Saturday Split

South Alabama volleyball beat Tennessee-Martin and fell to host Louisiana Tech on Saturday, placing second at the Lady Techster Invitational.

RUSTON, La. — South Alabama volleyball finished second at the Lady Techster Invitational after splitting its two matches Saturday at the tournament hosted by Louisiana Tech.

The Lady Jaguars opened the event with two wins Friday and leave Ruston with a 3-1 record to start the 2009 season.

The weekend gave South Alabama four matches in two days against non-conference opponents before the start of Sun Belt Conference play later in the fall.

Win Over Tennessee-Martin

South Alabama beat Tennessee-Martin 3-1 in its first match of the day, winning by set scores of 25-19, 20-25, 25-21 and 25-18.

Host Louisiana Tech Claims Title

In the evening match, the host Lady Techsters swept South Alabama 3-0 (25-20, 27-25, 25-22) to secure the tournament championship. The Lady Jaguars placed second.

Lindsay Schwartz and Jennica Hagberg were named to the all-tournament team, giving South Alabama two of the event’s individual honorees.

Louisiana Tech, a member of the Western Athletic Conference, claimed the title on its home floor.

Next: Georgia Dawg Invitational

South Alabama returns to action Friday and Saturday at the Georgia Dawg Invitational in Athens, Ga. The Lady Jaguars open against Tennessee State on Friday before facing Duke and host Georgia on Saturday.

The Athens event gives South Alabama a second straight road tournament and a chance to face two power-conference programs: Duke of the Atlantic Coast Conference and Georgia of the Southeastern Conference.

South Alabama competes in the Sun Belt Conference.
