Mobile police are searching for a suspect who fled on foot after crashing a stolen vehicle during an early-morning chase over the weekend.

According to a Mobile Police Department news release, officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a suspected stolen vehicle just after 4 a.m. Saturday near the intersection of University Boulevard and Airport Boulevard. Instead of stopping, the driver accelerated away from officers, prompting a pursuit through the surrounding area.

The chase came to an end a short time later when the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed on Knollwood Drive near Grelot Road. Rather than surrender to officers, the driver abandoned the vehicle and ran from the scene on foot.

As of the release, the suspect had not been located, and the search for the driver is ongoing.

A subsequent investigation determined that the vehicle had been stolen from Knollwood Apartments earlier that same morning, linking the crash directly to the reported theft. Investigators have not released a description of the suspect or specified how many people may have been involved in the theft or the chase.

Vehicle thefts and pursuits involving stolen cars remain a recurring concern for Mobile police, who regularly urge residents to lock vehicles and avoid leaving keys inside, particularly overnight near apartment complexes.

The Mobile Police Department says the investigation into both the theft and the chase is continuing, and no charges have yet been announced. Anyone with information is asked to contact investigators.
