A 19-year-old man who was days away from leaving for Army boot camp is instead learning how to walk again after a hit-and-run in Gulf Shores left him with a shattered pelvis, according to police and family members.
Luke Lambert was riding in a truck toward a truck meetup on the night of July 4 when another vehicle began following them, he told reporters from his hospital bed. When the group pulled into the parking lot of the Gulf State Park Pavilion and Lambert stepped out of the truck, the trailing vehicle struck him, pinning him between trucks before driving away.
A Long Road to Recovery
The impact fractured Lambert’s pelvis in multiple places. Surgeons used plates and screws to rebuild the joint. His older brother, Blake Lambert, said it was remarkable that no other bones were broken given that he was crushed between two vehicles. Doctors have told him he will have to relearn how to walk.
Lambert had enlisted in the Army and was scheduled to report for boot camp on Sunday; his enlistment plans are now on hold. Making matters harder, he does not have health insurance, and his family has started an online fundraiser to help cover medical bills.
Gulf Shores police are investigating. The driver has not been identified. Blake Lambert said the family is not looking to see anyone imprisoned — they simply want the person responsible found so they can seek help covering the medical costs.
