MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama running backs coach and special teams coordinator Tommy Perry is leaving the Jaguars to join the coaching staff at North Texas. North Texas is expected to announce the hire officially on Monday.
Two Openings on Jones’ Staff
Perry’s departure leaves head coach Joey Jones with two assistant coaching positions to fill.
Late last week, Jones hired Kevin Sherrer to replace Bill Clark, who left South Alabama to become head coach at Jacksonville State. Defensive backs coach Duwan Walker also left to join Clark at Jacksonville State as defensive coordinator. Walker and Clark came to South Alabama together from Prattville High School, where Walker was Clark’s defensive coordinator.
A Return to Texas
The move takes Perry back to Texas, where he played at Tyler Junior College and Texas A&M and where he and his wife have extensive family ties.
Perry’s coaching background includes strength and conditioning work at Texas, a graduate assistant position at Texas A&M-Commerce and a stint as assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Amsterdam Admirals of NFL Europe. Before joining the South Alabama staff, he was a graduate assistant and intern at Alabama.
Mean Green Changing Conferences
North Texas is a member of the Sun Belt Conference this season but will leave at the end of the academic year to join Conference USA. South Alabama competes in the Sun Belt.
