The University of South Alabama has once again landed on U.S. News & World Report’s list of Best Global Universities, earning a spot in the publication’s 2026-2027 rankings and putting South among an elite tier of institutions recognized on an international scale.
The rankings evaluated the top 2,250 schools worldwide, drawing from institutions across 105 countries. Out of more than 4,000 U.S. colleges and universities considered, only 275 made this year’s list, underscoring how selective the global ranking process has become even before regional and national comparisons come into play.
“We are honored that the University of South Alabama has been recognized on a global stage,” said USA President Jo Bonner. “We remain committed to providing an exceptional education that provides our graduates with a first-class ticket to a brighter future.”
South’s showing wasn’t limited to simply making the list. The university was ranked in the top 12 percent nationally for its regional research reputation, a distinction that reflects how the institution’s research output and academic standing are perceived among peer universities in the surrounding region.

The Best Global Universities rankings are built from 13 separate indicators designed to measure both the research performance and reputation of each institution. Among the factors considered are the percentage of a university’s highly cited papers that rank among the top 1 percent most cited worldwide, its global and regional research reputation as assessed by peer academics, and its volume of scholarly publications, with particular weight given to output in the social sciences and in arts and humanities fields.
For a public university based in Mobile, cracking a ranking dominated globally by large research institutions is a notable marker of how far South’s research profile has grown. University leaders have pointed in recent years to expanding graduate programs, growing research partnerships, and increased investment in faculty scholarship as part of a broader push to raise the university’s academic profile beyond the Gulf Coast region.
The recognition adds to a string of accolades the University of South Alabama has picked up in recent years across academics and athletics alike, and comes as the university continues to grow its enrollment and expand its research footprint along the Gulf Coast. School officials say they expect the university’s research output and reputation to continue climbing as new academic and research initiatives take hold in the coming years.
