5 Fun Things to Do on the Gulf Coast This Weekend, Aug. 14-16
An ArtWalk, a beach movie night, a dog-themed Exploreum day and more highlight this weekend's lineup of things to do on the Gulf Coast.
From an ArtWalk celebrating White Linen Night to a beachside movie night and a dog-themed day at the Exploreum, there’s plenty to do around Mobile and the Gulf Coast this weekend.
1. The monthly LODA ArtWalk returns to downtown Mobile on Friday, celebrating White Linen Night with a live performance from the Excelsior Band. Stilt walkers will stroll the streets alongside vendors featuring local artists, food trucks and a Kids’ Zone. The ArtWalk runs from 6 to 9 p.m.
2. Pensacola Beach hosts “Cinemas in the Sand” on Friday, part of a monthly movie night series running through October at the Gulfside Pavilion on Casino Beach. This weekend’s film is “GOAT,” beginning at sunset. Admission is free; guests just need to bring a blanket or chair.
3. The Exploreum celebrates “Dog Days of Summer” on Saturday with K9 demonstrations, dog tag ID services and a screening of the film “Superpower Dogs” in the Dome Theater. Wags & Whiskers will also be on hand with dogs available for adoption. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with regular Exploreum admission.
4. The Mobile Parks and Recreation Department hosts its next S.T.R.E.A.M. Saturday event, centered on Mars, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Mardi Gras Park, where kids can build mini Mars rovers, learn about solar energy and design their own Mars colonies. It’s followed immediately by a free Back 2 School Bash from 10 a.m. to noon, featuring 1,000 free backpacks filled with school supplies, along with games, food, face-painting and line-dancing.
5. The USTA Boys’ 12 & 14 National Championship continues through Saturday at the Mobile Tennis Center, marking the 15th year the tournament has been held in the Port City. Matches begin at 8 a.m. each morning and typically wrap up by 5 or 6 p.m. Admission is free.
The LoDa ArtWalk, named for the Lower Dauphin Street district at the heart of downtown Mobile, is held on the second Friday of each month, with galleries, shops and street vendors along Dauphin Street and around Cathedral Square.
