Frontman Wayne Coyne and the band built a reputation for sensory overload: confetti, rainbow screens, inflatable balloons and costumes with no obvious explanation. Coyne sometimes rolls across the crowd inside his clear “cosmic orb.” Concerts frequently turn into sing-alongs, and the band often pulls costumed fans on stage.
Guitarist Steven Drozd operates more in the shadows, weaving otherworldly sounds from guitar pedals, midi pads and keyboards. The Lips like to surprise crowds with unexpected covers; past sets have included David Bowie’s “Heroes,” the Beatles’ “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds” and Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs.”
