The Alabama Music Box closed out November 2012 with one of its strangest and loudest bills of the year on Friday, November 30, as the Gary Wrong Group headlined alongside Naked Intruder and the Stovebolts.
A Mobile Punk Supergroup of Sorts
The Gary Wrong Group featured Benny Devine of Super Nice Bros and New Orleans keyboard-and-drum eccentric Quintron, of Quintron and Miss Pussycat fame. Both the Gary Wrong Group and Naked Intruder counted local musician Gary Wrong — formerly of Mobile garage-punk outfit Wizzard Sleeve — among their members, making the night something of a showcase for one scene’s most prolific figures.
Naked Intruder’s Debut Single
The show also gave many attendees their first public look at Naked Intruder, whose “Effect Defect” 7-inch single had just arrived via Jeth-Row Records. The four-track EP packed short, abrasive bursts of punk rock fronted by singer Deke Purple’s unapologetically antisocial lyrics — a record that embraced the nastier end of the genre without apology.
For fans of loud, fast punk, scuzz and psychedelia, the Friday-night bill at the Dauphin Street venue was positioned as one of the season’s essential shows.
