Mobile Baykeeper Brings ‘Reduce the Use’ Cleanup to Three Mile Creek Neighborhood
Mobile Baykeeper hosted a Saturday cleanup at Marrion and Lawrence streets near Three Mile Creek as part of its NOAA-funded Reduce the Use anti-litter.
MOBILE, Ala. — Mobile Baykeeper turned a Saturday into a neighborhood spruce-up, hosting a cleanup starting at 9 a.m. at the corner of Marrion and Lawrence streets, near Three Mile Creek and Owens Elementary School.
The effort is part of the group’s “Reduce the Use” campaign, an anti-litter initiative funded through a federal grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Baykeeper runs the campaign in conjunction with the City of Mobile, the Downtown Mobile Alliance and Plastic Free Gulf Coast.
The idea behind Reduce the Use is straightforward: less single-use plastic and less roadside trash means less debris washing into storm drains and creeks, and ultimately into the Mobile-Tensaw Delta and Mobile Bay. Cleanups near Three Mile Creek put volunteers where that runoff funnel begins.
Volunteers were supplied with bags and gloves to collect litter from streets and greenspace around the school and the creek corridor, part of a broader push to improve one of Mobile’s most visible urban waterways.
About Three Mile Creek and Baykeeper
Three Mile Creek flows east through the city of Mobile before emptying into the Mobile River. The City of Mobile has built the Three Mile Creek Greenway, a multi-use trail, along portions of the creek.
Mobile Baykeeper is a member of the Waterkeeper Alliance, a network of organizations that each monitor and advocate for a specific body of water.
