Young tennis standouts from across the country will descend on Mobile next week as the Mobile Tennis Center hosts the USTA Boys’ 12s and 14s National Championship for the 15th consecutive year.

The tournament runs from Saturday, Aug. 8, through Saturday, Aug. 15, at the Mobile Tennis Center, which organizers describe as the largest public tennis facility in the United States. Admission to watch the competition is free and open to the public throughout the week-long event.

Scott Novak, general manager of the Mobile Tennis Center, and Sami Udell, the facility’s director of tennis and tournament promotion, discussed the tournament’s significance for the city in a recent appearance on a local sports program, highlighting the annual event’s impact on Mobile’s profile within national junior tennis circles.

A Longstanding Tradition on the Gulf Coast

The USTA Boys’ 12s and 14s National Championship is one of several age-group national championships sanctioned by the United States Tennis Association, bringing together some of the top-ranked young players in those age divisions from across the country to compete for national titles. Mobile’s status as a repeat host site for a decade and a half reflects the scale of the Mobile Tennis Center, a public facility built to accommodate large-scale tournament play alongside community and recreational use.

The tournament is expected to draw families and competitors from around the country to Mobile for the week, with matches spread across the facility’s many courts. Local tennis officials say hosting a USTA national championship of this scale brings both athletic prestige and an economic boost to the Port City, as visiting families patronize area hotels, restaurants and attractions throughout their stay.

With admission free for spectators, tennis fans in the Mobile area will have the opportunity to watch some of the nation’s top young talent compete throughout the week, culminating in championship matches as the tournament wraps up Aug. 15.

Part of the USTA National Junior Circuit

The USTA’s boys’ national championships are divided by age group and played at different sites each summer. The older 16s and 18s divisions are held in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where the 18s singles champion earns a wild card into the U.S. Open main draw.
