Callaghan’s Irish Social Club’s long-running Wednesday night residency gets a special boost this week when local duo Phil & Foster welcome touring singer-songwriter Edward David Anderson to the Oakleigh Garden District stage. Music starts at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 12, with a $5 cover at the door of the Charleston Street venue.
A residency known for surprise guests
Phil Proctor and Stan Foster, both also members of the Marlow Boys, have made Wednesdays at what regulars call Oakleigh’s “town hall” their own, rolling out a rotating book of Americana deep cuts and offbeat country numbers. The duo has built a reputation for pulling talented friends into the set — past guests have included Jimmy Hall of Wet Willie and Cary Hudson, among others.
Edward David Anderson’s Gulf Coast roots
This week’s guest brings his own Alabama connection. Anderson cut his teeth fronting Midwestern rock band Backyard Tire Fire, but he has put down real sonic roots on the Gulf Coast: his 2015 record “Lower Alabama: The Loxley Sessions” was born in Baldwin County.
His most recent full-length, 2018’s “Chasing Butterflies,” was produced by studio veteran Jimmy Nutt of The NuttHouse Recording Studio, whose credits include Jason Isbell and the Drive-By Truckers. The album delivers a down-home Americana sound shaped by modern Nashville-adjacent craft — a fitting match for Callaghan’s close-quarters crowd.
