BAY MINETTE, Ala. — For the second time in a matter of days, the Pine Grove Volunteer Fire Department was called out to a structure fire, this time a Pine Grove trailer fire that destroyed a home on Pine Grove Road late Monday.

Firefighters were dispatched at about 9:50 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 12, to a trailer fire at 41667 Pine Grove Road in north Baldwin County. When crews arrived, they found heavy fire and smoke coming from the structure.

Firefighters were able to quickly knock down and extinguish the flames, but the trailer was destroyed. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.

A Busy Week for a Volunteer Department

The Monday night call was the department’s second structure fire in just a few days. Details of the earlier fire were not released with the report of Monday’s blaze.

The Pine Grove Volunteer Fire Department operates from its station on Pine Grove Road outside Bay Minette and covers a rural stretch of north Baldwin County, where homes are spread out and the nearest hydrant can be some distance away. Like most of the county’s fire districts outside its cities, Pine Grove relies on volunteers who leave their homes, families and jobs to answer calls at all hours.

Rural volunteer departments often work alongside neighboring departments through mutual aid when a fire is large or when water must be shuttled to a scene by tanker, and many depend on community fundraisers and grants to keep equipment in service.

Residents interested in volunteering, or in supporting the department, can contact the Pine Grove Volunteer Fire Department directly. Volunteer departments across Baldwin County regularly seek new members for firefighting, medical response and support roles.

Why Manufactured Home Fires Move Fast

Fires in mobile and manufactured homes can spread quickly because of their compact layout and the relatively short distance between living spaces. Older units, particularly those built before federal manufactured housing standards took effect in 1976, may have fewer fire-resistant materials and less protection around heating equipment.

By the time firefighters reach a rural address, a fire that started small may already have involved much of the structure — one reason fire officials stress early warning and a quick escape over trying to fight a fire.

Fire Safety Tips for Rural Homes

Fire safety officials recommend that every household, especially those in rural areas with longer response times, take a few basic steps:

  • Install working smoke alarms inside each bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, and test them monthly.
  • Plan and practice a home escape route with two ways out of every room when possible, and choose a meeting place outside.
  • Keep space heaters at least three feet from anything that can burn, and turn them off when leaving the room or going to bed.
  • Have heating systems, chimneys and wood stoves inspected before cold weather sets in.
  • Avoid overloading outlets and extension cords, and replace damaged cords.
  • Charge phones, tools and other battery-powered devices on hard surfaces and avoid charging them unattended overnight.
  • Make sure your house number is clearly visible from the road so firefighters and medics can find you quickly at night.

Some local fire departments and the American Red Cross offer free smoke alarm installation programs for households that need them.

Help After a House Fire

Families who lose a home to fire may be able to get immediate assistance with emergency lodging, food and clothing through the American Red Cross, which responds to home fires across Alabama. Churches and community groups in north Baldwin County also frequently organize donation drives for families displaced by fire.

Officials did not say whether anyone was living in the trailer at the time of Monday’s fire or whether anyone was displaced.

What Comes Next

The cause of the Pine Grove Road fire remains unknown. South Alabama News will update this story if fire officials release more information about the cause or about the department’s earlier structure fire this week.
