Travelers carrying luggage through an airport terminal during the holidaysTravelers move through the terminal ahead of the Christmas holiday

While airports across the country braced for holiday crowds, Mobile Regional Airport was a calm spot on Christmas Eve morning — no delays and only a handful of departures to Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, and Charlotte.

Travelers passing through included one passenger whose flight out of Pensacola was canceled, prompting a drive to Mobile to make a connection, and a newlywed couple heading home from their honeymoon through Dallas on their way to Milwaukee to reach family in time for Christmas.

“It’s pretty quiet here, which is nice… We were expecting it to be a little more hectic being Christmas Eve, but it’s been nice so far,” said Taylor Latona, who was traveling with her husband. “This was just the way we could maximize our trip.”

Mobile Airport Authority officials said the peak days at the regional airport actually fell the week before the holiday, and that so far they hadn’t seen the passenger numbers projected for the days after Christmas and New Year’s.
