MOBILE, Ala. — Matt Jackson allowed one run over four innings and South Alabama baseball scored four times in the bottom of the first inning on its way to a 10-3 win over Meridian in a seven-inning fall game at Eddie Stanky Field.
Jackson Settles In
Meridian scored first, stringing together three consecutive singles in the top of the first inning to push across a run.
Jackson allowed only two more hits over the remainder of his four innings, facing 12 more batters after the opening run. South Alabama answered the early run with four of its own in the bottom of the first and did not trail again.
Byrd Makes Collegiate Debut Against Outside Competition
Freshman left-hander Phillip Byrd took over to start the fifth inning, his first appearance against outside competition at the college level. The first four batters he faced reached base on three walks and a hit batsman. A ground-ball double play limited the damage to two runs, and South Alabama led 10-3 after five innings.
Byrd returned for the sixth inning and allowed a single and a walk without giving up a run.
Jake LeBlanc pitched the seventh. He issued a leadoff walk, then retired the next three batters to end the game.
