AUBURN, Ala. — The South Alabama soccer team lost 3-0 to Auburn on Sunday afternoon at the Auburn Soccer Complex, closing a weekend in which the Jaguars faced two nationally prominent programs on the road.
The loss dropped South Alabama to 1-2-0 early in the 2009 season. Auburn improved to 1-0-2 with the win.
A Weekend Against Strong Opposition
The match at Auburn followed South Alabama’s game against Florida State, which was ranked fifth nationally. The Jaguars lost both contests on the trip.
Against the Tigers, South Alabama surrendered two goals before settling in and producing more of the play in the second half, according to head coach Mike Vargas.
“It was a tough weekend. We played two very good teams this weekend,” Vargas said. “We competed a lot better in the second half today. We gave away two goals, but after that, we competed better and created some chances the other way.”
Vargas said he hoped the team would take something from facing opponents of that caliber so early in the season.
“Hopefully, we learned some lessons in playing some very good teams this weekend,” he said. “Florida State is a potential Final Four team, and Auburn isn’t far behind that.”
