ATLANTA — South Alabama volleyball lost the opening set Saturday and then won the next three to beat Georgia State 3-1, ending a three-match losing streak.
The Jaguars won by set scores of 22-25, 25-15, 25-19, 25-21 to improve to 8-8 overall and 3-3 in Sun Belt Conference play. Georgia State fell to 3-12 and 1-5.
Daniel, Lewis Lead the Attack
Mechell Daniel had 16 kills and hit a season-best .385, committing only one attack error in 39 swings. Jessica Lewis added 14 kills on .324 hitting.
Nikki Gittens had eight kills on .438 hitting and led the team with four blocks, one solo and three assisted. Symone Stephenson added seven kills and hit .308.
South Alabama’s .338 team hitting percentage was its second-best of the season, behind the .368 it posted in a straight-set win over Georgia State earlier this season in Mobile.
Serving and Defense
The Jaguars held a 10-7 edge in service aces. Emily Hundt led the team with four, and Jenna Hassell and Savannah Stewart had two each.
Abby Baker led South Alabama with 15 digs, and Hassell added 11.
