Meghan Dunn’s Career-High 21 Leads South Alabama Women Past Western Kentucky 74-65 in Sun Belt Opener

Meghan Dunn scored a career-high 21 points and four Jaguars reached double figures as South Alabama beat Western Kentucky 74-65 in its Sun Belt opener.

MOBILE, Ala. — Meghan Dunn scored a career-high 21 points as the South Alabama women’s basketball team beat Western Kentucky 74-65 on Wednesday afternoon at the Mitchell Center to open Sun Belt Conference play.

Four Jaguars scored in double figures as South Alabama improved to 3-8 overall and 1-0 in the Sun Belt. Western Kentucky fell to 8-4 and 0-1 in its final visit to the Mitchell Center as a Sun Belt rival.

Dunn, Cumbo Lead the Way

Dunn made 7 of 13 shots from the field, including both of her 3-point attempts, and went 5-for-5 at the free-throw line.

Rachel Cumbo scored 17 points, just short of her career high. All four of her field goals were 3-pointers; she finished 4-of-6 from the field, 4-of-5 from 3-point range and 5-of-6 at the line, and grabbed seven rebounds in 32 minutes.

Webb Sets Career High

Brittany Webb scored a career-high 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting, making both 3-point attempts and all four free throws. Colby Davis added 10 points, going 8-of-11 at the line.

South Alabama made 25 of 32 free throws as a team. The Jaguars shot 55 percent in the second half, when they made four 3-pointers.

Hilltoppers Without Govan

Chastity Gooch led Western Kentucky with a game-high 26 points and nine rebounds. Bianca McGee added 17 points and was the only other Hilltopper in double figures.

Western Kentucky played without its leading scorer, Alexis Govan, the Sun Belt preseason player of the year, who was out with a foot injury.
