THEODORE, Ala. — The Southwest Mobile County Chamber of Commerce will hold its fourth annual Sporting Clay Shoot on Sept. 25 at Taylor Creek Sporting Clays, 11910 Old Windsor Road in Theodore.
Registration begins at 8 a.m., with the shoot getting underway at 9 a.m. Lunch and an awards presentation follow. Trophies will be awarded to first-place teams.
How sporting clays works
Sporting clays is often described as golf with a shotgun, and the comparison holds reasonably well. Teams move through a course of stations, each presenting clay targets thrown at different angles, speeds and trajectories to simulate flushing birds or running game. No two stations play alike, which keeps experienced shooters engaged and gives newcomers a genuine chance to improve over the course of a morning.
The team format makes it particularly well suited to a chamber event. Squads of shooters spend several hours together working through the course, which produces the kind of extended, unhurried conversation that a luncheon rarely allows.
A steady chamber tradition
Now in its fourth year, the shoot has become a fixture on the Southwest Mobile County Chamber’s calendar. Chamber events of this kind typically support member programming, scholarships and community initiatives across the Theodore, Grand Bay, Irvington and surrounding communities.
