The storm moved through downtown Mobile shortly after 3 p.m., prompting the National Weather Service to issue a severe thunderstorm warning that flagged the potential for wind gusts up to 60 mph. Within minutes, the storm’s outer bands were tearing across the waterfront near the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park, sending loose grass, leaves and debris swirling through the air on camera footage from the park.

How the Waterspout Formed

At about 3:10 p.m., meteorologists monitoring the storm noticed a patch of turbulent, rotating clouds developing over the Mobile River in the vicinity of Battleship Park. That appears to be roughly the track this one followed as it pushed east across the bay approaches south of the Bayway.
