Travelers passing through Conecuh County on Interstate 65 should plan for short daytime closures at both rest areas later this month, as crews with the Alabama Department of Transportation repaint pavilion structures at the sites.
ALDOT says the work is necessary to keep paint overspray from damaging vehicles parked at the rest areas while crews are working, which requires temporarily shutting each site down rather than working around visitors.
The northbound rest area will be closed July 28 through July 30, with work hours running from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The southbound rest area will follow with its own closure window from August 3 through August 5, also from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
Both facilities will reopen each evening once the day’s painting work concludes, meaning the closures are limited to daytime hours only and will not affect overnight travelers.
ALDOT is encouraging motorists traveling through the area during the affected windows to plan ahead, noting that drivers who need a rest stop during the closures should use the next available rest area or nearby services rather than counting on the Conecuh County locations to be open.
The agency describes the painting project as routine maintenance intended to keep the rest areas looking well-kept and welcoming for the large volume of travelers who pass through south Alabama on I-65 each year, many en route to or from the Gulf Coast.
