A day of fear across two Gulf Coast states ended peacefully in west Mobile, where police took an accused killer into custody and recovered the 2-year-old daughter he had allegedly taken from Pascagoula, Mississippi.
From Homicide Scene to West Mobile
Pascagoula police said Joe Quincy McCord shot a woman — identified by authorities as his estranged wife — at the Bandywood Apartments on Orchard Road around 5:15 p.m. on February 5, 2019, then left the scene with young Genisis McCord. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation issued an AMBER Alert as officers warned the suspect might be headed toward Prichard, Alabama, where McCord had ties.
Hours later, a heavy police presence gathered at a Chevron station at University Boulevard and Grelot Road in Mobile after a car matching the alert’s description — a 2018 gray or gold Ford Fusion with Alabama plates — was spotted there. Mobile police confirmed McCord was taken into custody at the scene and that Genisis had been located safe.
Charges Filed
By early Wednesday morning, McCord had been booked into the Jackson County Jail in Mississippi on charges of murder and domestic violence simple assault. Authorities described him during the search as armed and dangerous, noting a criminal history that included prior domestic assault charges in Mobile County.
The case drew attention on both sides of the state line, with investigators crediting the AMBER Alert system and tips from the public in locating the vehicle and bringing the standoff to a nonviolent end.
