BAY MINETTE, Ala. — The Baldwin County Commission paid $14,528,106.21 in sales and use tax proceeds to the Baldwin County Board of Education for August 2022, according to figures posted on social media by the group Baldwin County Citizens for Government Accountability.

Fiscal year totals

According to the group, payments to the Baldwin County Board of Education for the first 11 months of fiscal year 2022 total $130,888,985.70. That is $12,825,094.51 more than payments for the same period in 2021. The fiscal year began Oct. 1, 2021, and ends Sept. 30, 2022.

The Gulf Shores Board of Education received $1,075,649.03 for August, bringing its total for the first 11 months of the fiscal year to $9,380,200.06, according to the figures.

Combined, the two school systems have received $140,269,185.76 in local sales and use tax revenue so far in fiscal year 2022.

How the tax is distributed

The county commission collects a 3-cent sales and use tax on each taxable dollar spent, and 2.4 cents of that tax is distributed to the two school boards, according to the group.

The figures do not include property taxes or other local funding sources. The group noted that this sales tax revenue stays in Baldwin County and, unlike property tax revenue, is not shared with other school systems through the state’s equity funding program.

New positions and the group’s position

The group also noted that the Baldwin County Board of Education is advertising two new supervisor positions, one in human resources and one in special services, with a salary range of $91,000 to $103,000.

Members of the group said the revenue figures show that no additional property tax increases are needed for education.
