The Blind Mule has long been one of Mobile’s musical hubs, and its upstairs Attic stage has launched more than a few local and regional acts. Among the regulars are The Handsome Scoundrels, a Mobile trio and SouthSounds Festival veterans who returned to The Attic on Dec. 1 for a packed show.
A Mobile Band Looking Back
Bassist and backing vocalist Michael McAuliffe said playing back in Mobile for friends who don’t often get to see the band felt special after a year of mostly out-of-town dates. He noted the local scene keeps evolving, with a growing number of rock bands putting out strong work.
The group released its new EP, “Thick Cuts,” this fall on Outloud! Records. McAuliffe described the songs as either about girls or about very specific moments from the band’s own life, and said a full-length record should arrive next year.
Why The Attic Matters
The Attic’s intimate room, good sound and couches have made it a favorite for punk and underground acts. The Handsome Scoundrels have played the venue repeatedly and appeared at SouthSounds in 2012 and 2013, plus an early incarnation of LoDa Live in 2011. Fans who missed the December show can stream the track “Shipwrecked” from the new EP.
