MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. — The Mobile County Board of School Commissioners has scheduled a special-called meeting for Friday, Aug. 7, at 10 a.m., according to Mobile County Public Schools.

The meeting will be held in the Board Room at the MCPSS Central Office, located at 1 Magnum Pass in west Mobile.

Special-called meetings differ from the board’s regular monthly sessions and are typically convened to address specific, time-sensitive items that arise between scheduled board meetings. MCPSS did not publish a detailed agenda alongside the meeting announcement on its live feed.

The Mobile County Board of School Commissioners oversees policy, budget and personnel matters for Mobile County Public Schools, one of the largest school districts in Alabama, serving campuses throughout the county from Mobile’s urban core to outlying communities like Wilmer, Citronelle and Grand Bay. The board’s meetings are generally open to the public, giving residents the opportunity to observe board discussion and decision-making firsthand.

Residents seeking more information on the meeting or the board’s agenda can check MCPSS’s official channels for updates ahead of Friday’s session.

How Special Meetings Work

Alabama’s Open Meetings Act requires governmental bodies such as school boards to give advance public notice of their meetings — generally at least 24 hours in advance for a special meeting — and to deliberate and vote in public. The law allows closed executive sessions only for a limited set of reasons, such as discussing an individual’s job performance or pending litigation, and any vote must still take place in open session.
