Mobile Opens Registration for Jan. 29 Household Hazardous Waste Collection
Mobile's free Household Hazardous Waste Collection runs Jan. 29 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at James Seales Jr. Park. Resident registration is open now.
Mobile residents can start the new year by clearing out hazardous household materials responsibly. The city will hold a free Household Hazardous Waste Collection event on Saturday, Jan. 29, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at James Seales Jr. Park.
The event gives residents a safe way to discard items that cannot go out with the regular trash.
Participation is limited to individual residents, and registration is required in advance — the city has opened its online registration for the event. Businesses and contractors cannot drop off materials.
What counts as household hazardous waste
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency defines household hazardous waste as leftover household products that can catch fire, react or explode under certain conditions, or that are corrosive or toxic. Common examples include paints and solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals, used motor oil and automotive fluids, and certain batteries.
Because these products can harm sanitation workers, contaminate water and damage septic and sewer systems, they should not be poured down drains or placed in household garbage. Residents should keep items in their original containers so they can be identified at drop-off.
