Mobile police are asking the public for help identifying a suspect tied to a Friday night shooting that left a woman wounded on Baltimore Street.
Officers responded to a call about a shooting at 10:48 p.m. Friday at 1010 Baltimore Street, according to the Mobile Police Department. When they arrived, officers learned that a female victim had been shot and had already been taken to a local hospital for treatment.
“The victim sustained a minor, non-life-threatening gunshot wound,” MPD said in a statement. “This remains an active investigation, and no further information will be released at this time.”
An open case with few public details
Police have not released a description of the suspect, and it is not yet clear whether the shooter and the victim knew each other — a factor investigators often weigh early in determining whether a shooting was targeted or random. The department has also not said where the victim was when she was hit or how she got to the hospital.
The withholding of details is common in the early hours of a shooting investigation. Detectives typically work to canvass the neighborhood for doorbell and surveillance footage, interview witnesses and check whether nearby cameras captured vehicles leaving the area before deciding what can safely be made public. Because the victim survived, investigators also have a direct witness they can interview once her condition allows.
Baltimore Street sits in a residential part of the city, and a late-night shooting in a neighborhood blocks away from homes naturally raises concerns among residents. MPD has not announced any arrests connected to the case, and the department said the investigation is active.
How these cases typically move forward
Non-fatal shootings present their own set of investigative challenges. A surviving victim can help detectives reconstruct what happened, but investigators still need physical evidence — shell casings, footage and eyewitness accounts — to identify and charge a suspect. Ballistic evidence recovered at the scene can also be compared against regional databases to determine whether the same weapon has appeared in other cases.
Anyone with information related to this case can contact the Mobile Police Department at 251-208-7211. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Mobile Area Crime Stoppers, which allows callers to provide information without revealing their identity and may qualify for a cash reward if the tip leads to an arrest.
MPD urged anyone who may have seen or heard anything in the area Friday night — including drivers with dash cameras who passed through the neighborhood — to come forward, even if the details seem minor. Investigators say small observations about vehicles, directions of travel or voices in the area often prove decisive in cases like this one.
