Mobile police are searching for a suspect who cut a man during a fight at a west-of-downtown apartment complex, the latest in a string of assault cases the department is working to close with the public’s help.

The Mobile Police Department said the altercation unfolded Thursday evening at the Dauphin Gate Apartments, an apartment community off Dauphin Street. During the fight, an unidentified suspect cut the victim with an edged weapon, leaving him with lacerations that were not life-threatening.

Police first learned of the stabbing not from the scene but from a hospital. At about 6:14 p.m., officers were called to a local hospital after the wounded man arrived for treatment. That call set in motion an assault investigation that remains open as detectives work to identify the person responsible.

How the Case Came to Light

Incidents like this one frequently surface at hospital emergency rooms rather than at the scene of the attack. When a stabbing victim arrives at a medical facility, staff notify police, and officers respond to document the injuries, interview the victim and begin tracing where the assault happened. In this case, investigators quickly tied the injuries to the fight at the Dauphin Gate Apartments.

MPD has not released a description of the suspect or said what sparked the argument. The victim’s injuries were described as non-life-threatening, and there has been no announcement of an arrest.

The Department’s Ask

Investigators say anyone with information about the incident can contact MPD at 251-208-7211. Tips from witnesses, neighbors and bystanders are often what move a case from an unidentified suspect to an arrest, particularly in fights where those present may know the people involved.

The case remains under investigation, and MPD has not indicated whether charges will include assault in the second degree, the classification typically applied to stabbings that cause serious physical injury, or another offense. Because the victim survived with non-life-threatening lacerations, the charging decision will depend on the severity of the injuries documented and the circumstances investigators are able to establish.

A Reminder for Residents

Police stress that arguments that turn physical can escalate to serious violence in seconds, and that a weapon of any kind transforms a fistfight into a felony investigation. Anyone who witnesses an altercation turning violent is encouraged to call 911 rather than intervene directly, and to provide a description of those involved along with any direction of travel.

The Mobile Police Department urges anyone with information about this incident to come forward. Tips can be directed to investigators at 251-208-7211.
