A routine Saturday in Saraland turned into an unforgettable wildlife encounter when a black bear wandered into a neighborhood near Celeste Road and came face to face with an unlikely opponent: a house cat named Kitty.
The bear was spotted roaming the area on Nov. 24, 2018, drawing the attention of residents who watched from a cautious distance. But the real show began when Kitty, apparently unimpressed by the size difference, locked eyes with the bear in what onlookers described as a full-blown staring contest.
A resident snapped a photo of the standoff and shared it online, where it quickly captured the imagination of the community. The image showed the cat holding its ground with remarkable composure while the much larger bear appeared to study its small challenger.
Bear Sightings Not Uncommon in North Mobile County
Black bear sightings in the Saraland area and other parts of north Mobile County are not unheard of. The region sits adjacent to large stretches of undeveloped woodland and pine forest that serve as natural habitat for the animals. Wildlife officials typically advise residents to keep their distance, secure trash cans and pet food, and never attempt to feed or corner a bear.
In most cases, bears that wander into residential areas are simply passing through in search of food and move along on their own. No injuries or property damage were reported in connection with the Saraland sighting.

While the encounter ended peacefully, Kitty’s bold stand added a lighthearted chapter to the ongoing story of human-wildlife coexistence in south Alabama. House cats are known for their territorial confidence, and viral videos of cats confronting much larger animals have become a staple of internet culture. In this case, the Saraland community got to witness the phenomenon firsthand.
Residents are reminded that if they spot a bear in their neighborhood, the best course of action is to give the animal plenty of space and contact local wildlife authorities if it appears distressed or refuses to leave.
