S’mores on the Shore Returns to Gulf Shores Public Beach With Free Campfires and Music

Some community events survive because a city keeps them on life support. S’mores on the Shore is not one of them. Sixteen years after its debut, the free beachside gathering in Gulf Shores still draws crowds to the public beach on a summer evening for nothing more elaborate than campfires, music and toasted marshmallows.

The City of Gulf Shores will hold the event on Thursday, August 6, 2026, at Gulf Place, 101 Gulf Shores Parkway. Festivities begin at 6 p.m. Admission is free and the event is open to everyone.

What Is Offered

The city provides the core of the evening at no cost to attendees.

• Free s’mores packets, distributed on site for roasting over the beachside campfires.
• A live DJ supplying music through the evening.
• A balloon artist.
• Face painting for children.
• Free fresh watermelon, provided by Wheeles Realty.

Local organizations will also set up along the beach. The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Tourism, and the Gulf Shores Police Department K9 Division are all expected to participate. The K9 unit in particular tends to draw a steady line of children.

For those who want dinner rather than dessert, the Hog Wild food truck and the Lions Club will be on site with food available for purchase.

Come Prepared for the Sand

This is a beach event in the most literal sense, held on the sand at the Gulf Shores Public Beach rather than in a park or a plaza. Families are encouraged to bring blankets, folding chairs and friends. There is no reserved seating and no ticketing; the beach is the venue.

Early August on the Alabama Gulf Coast means heat that lingers well past sunset, so lightweight clothing and water are worth packing. The 6 p.m. start is timed to catch the cooling hours and, with luck, a Gulf sunset behind the festivities.

Sixteen Years and Still Growing

Recreation and Cultural Affairs Director Grant Brown has watched the event evolve since its beginning.

“We started S’mores on the Shore in 2010, and it quickly became a fan-favorite amongst our residents and guests,” Brown said. “It’s the perfect event for families of all ages who are looking for a little free fun and excitement.”

He added: “When you combine our beautiful beaches, music, campfires, and s’mores, it really does make for an incredible night.”

The formula has not needed much revision. City officials say the goal from the outset was to offer a genuinely free night out for people of all ages, and the combination of beach scenery, live entertainment and community vendors has kept attendance strong across more than a decade and a half.

Why Free Events Matter in a Tourism Economy

Gulf Shores exists in an economy where nearly everything carries a price tag during peak season. Beach chairs are rented. Parking is paid. Dinner reservations at the waterfront restaurants require planning and money. An event that costs a family of four exactly nothing is a meaningful counterweight, and it serves residents as much as visitors.

It also builds something less tangible. Events like this one are where year-round residents and summer visitors end up sitting on the same stretch of sand, which is not something the tourism economy otherwise produces very often.
